Hi , thanks for coming to Highway Cottage for a look at our world.
We moved here from the city just over 6 years ago. Our intention was to gain more space and perhaps grow some of our own food. Over time our goals have changed a bit, to gain more space one day, and grow as much as we can. At the moment we grow our own beef and lamb, and occasionally pigs, have our own hens for eggs and have some young fruit trees and are working on the ever expanding garden. Its a very big learning curve as neither DH or I come from farming background. We have had some funny experiences with the animals, and some hair-raising ones with the weather too – like when we lost two huge gum trees onto the main highway and had to call out the fire brigade to clear the road. So keep reading, and have a laugh along with us.
This blog is also a record of my crafting experiences. Most of which are quilting, but the occasional sewing of clothing, toys, cloth nappies and even a wee bit of felting here and there. I have also opened an online shop, Sew Vivid, to sell my handcrafts. I am very happy to custom make quilts or other hand sewn gifts, just send me an email. You’ll find the link on the sidebar.

Well guys this is sooooooo cool!!!!!!!!!!
How cool! Happy to find your blog. I used to live a small city of 20,000 and that was too big. Now I live in the third largest city of my state. Yuck! My mom and I want to go across the country and find a piece of real country. We keep saying we will grow some veggies in our yard but haven’t done it yet. It was interesting to see your lovely old sewing machine. I can’t find one that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg! I used to sew every day but now I’m trying to start a community newspaper and I’m back at school. Maybe sometime I should send you some of my primitive dolls. I don’t have time to make them any more either.
Write me sometime!
hi,
It’s Tina from Cottage Quilting Bee…can you email me so that I can have a complete list of our participants? Thanks!

That’s so great that you are going on this adventure without any farming knowledge! At the moment, I am very good at killing plants! I guess the best way to learn is to get stuck in!
Just found your blog- linked in from another one. Whereabouts in NZ are you? I’ll be back to have a good look around when I’m not so tired.
I’m a baby quilter and an all-around crafter so I’m sure to find some inspiration here. Loved your photo of the pumpkins!

Love the quilts you have made and just have a quick question… I am a hand quilter. Not so much by choice, but because I haven’t yet got a machine …. what do you use? The quilting looks so lovely – I am guessing it must be a good machine. well done.
