Circle of geese..

Cot quilt size.

I’ve managed to get quite a few to-do jobs crossed off my list so far this week.  The quilt above was one of them.  The next was to get my swap parcel ready for the Make Mine Modern swap.  Here’s the goodies I’m sending my partner…

I still had 2 bee blocks to make for March – I got one completed today and now that I have the right supplies I can work on the other one tomorrow :-)

A tree block for Corley.

And last but not least an applique on a top for Lilly…

Check out some of the gorgeous things that the postie has delivered to me recently…

Some Echino (that I got for a steal on Trademe) and a pattern that I was lucky enough to win. The “Seeing squares” pattern is made by Shea over at the Empty Bobbin, I won it in a giveaway on Jacquie’s blog Tallgrass Prairie Studio.  I wanted the pattern the first time that I saw it on Shea’s blog, so was very pleased to win it.  I’m going to try it out as soon as I can get myself a suitable stack of gorgeous fabrics.  I have some blues I’ve been stashing away :-)

I also got a couple of books that have been on my wish list for a few months.

Dare to be Square quilting – I was able to have a flick through this book thanks to Amy who got it out of the Wellington library and bought it one night to sewing group.  There are heaps of patterns in it that I wanted to try out, so it was a good investment.

The Practical Guide to Patchwork by Elizabeth Hartman of Oh Fransson - I wanted this as soon as I saw it too, even though I had not seen inside.  I have to say when it came I was not disappointed. There are a few patterns inside that I’m desperate to try out.  I’m a huge fan of Elizabeth’s work.

Both books came via The Book Depository UK, which had great prices, free worldwide delivery and spectacular service !!! I’ll definitely buy from them again.

I’ll be back sooner rather than later, I actually finished a quilt today. Just a small one.

Dr Seuss – quilt 4

Yay, I finished the 4th Dr Seuss quilt yesterday.  I love the limited palette of red, white and black.

Pattern is a slightly modified version of Hexagon Park, which the fabulous Lynne of Lily’s Quilts designed.

I hope the customer likes it, if not you may find it in the shop very soon :-)

Want to see the other gorgeous Dr Seuss quilt tops without having to scroll back a few pages?? I do :-)

Yay, we’ve had rain.  Lots of it.  The tanks are up to about a third in each, the garden is well and truly watered and its still drizzling !!  I’m so pleased.  As long as we get some more rain in the next fortnight we’ll be able to hold off from buying water :-)

Another woohoo.. the big cow and both pigs went to the butcher yesterday.  That’s a years worth of meat (almost) safe in the freezer. It’s always a relief to know that it’s done.  We lost a calf to BVD a couple of years ago, that was almost a whole year where we had to buy meat.  So glad that won’t be happening again.  Our Ewes have gone to visit a ram and will be back in a few weeks time, hopefully in lamb.  Little cow will be lonely till then :-(

Boo – I have germs :-(   Cam is home from Kindy for the 2nd day, he had a wee bit (and I mean a very small bit) of a tummy bug that was going around kindy, but they are asking parents to keep the kids home for 48 hours after getting well.  Cam is missing Kindy, he loves it there and being with his friends.

Boo too – I’m getting behind a bit on bee blocks and orders this month :-(

Bugger !!!

We have no water :-(

The tanks might have enough to last this week, but they might not.  The bore (which we use to fill the animal troughs and water the vege garden) is DRY. The bore hasn’t been dry for a couple of years, since we last had a drought.  I’m hoping it will rain tomorrow, but even it if does it’s unlikely to be enough to make much difference and I will still have to BUY water.  Stink.  The only upside – tomorrow is B-Day (butcher) for most of the critters (big cow, pigs and J and D’s sheep), so I won’t have to use much water for the chickens and little cow.  I got Ian to set up the water recycling from the washing machine so we can continue to water the garden.  It’s too late for some of the plants though, my small Feijoa tree is dead :-(

My camera is out of batteries, so until Ian brings me some when he gets home tonight the only pics I can show you are some of Cam at the BMX track that I took last week, and my almost finished mini quilt for the swap.

It’s quiet here…

Sometimes I think I have a lot to say, but most of it is just talking to myself :-)   I haven’t been doing a lot of sewing in the last week or so, just a few pieces here and there.  Some shoes for the shop,

a couple of bee blocks

and a Dresden plate which is part of a Quilt-a-long over at Lily’s Quilts.  I’ve tried a Dresden plate pattern before and it didn’t work out great for me :-(   But I used Lynne’s template (I was in too much of a rush to wait for the sewing instructions) and it turned out great !! I used the last of some “Summer Song” by Riley Blake fabric, which I have no more of, so this will eventually be turned into a cot quilt.

I have lots of work to get on with, but sometimes the motivation is missing.

I have a job interview tomorrow.  I’m nervous and excited.  It would be awesome to go back to (almost) fulltime work.  Oh, well, must wait and see how it turns out. Matt had a job interview today, fingers crossed that he gets work, it would be great for his confidence.

I’ve decided we will no longer watch the 6pm news.  I don’t think the kids need to see all the doom and gloom that’s going on at the moment.  I was watching Cam play today and he was making boats and telling me that they people on them were all dead, I think he’s absorbing too much of the earthquake and tsunami news that’s been on.  Ian and I can watch the late news instead.

Right – off to bed now. Happy sewing.

I know which way up I prefer :-)

After the 2 Christchurch earthquakes, the China one a few days ago and now the 8.9 in Japan tonight I am starting to worry about a big one here.  We live right on the fault line.  We are NOT prepared.

I had planned on getting some survival kit items together last payday, but shopping cost so much that I didn’t end up getting anything.  We have water, provided we are at home, and a working barbecue so we could cook.  But we would only have plenty of food it was close to payday (excuse me mr earthquake, can you come next week when we’re flush??)

Yes, I am freaking out a bit.  I always was a bit of a worrier as a child and have to say I still am.  Are you prepared?  Are you worried?  What’s next ?  California?  Wellington?  Auckland?

Thinking of the people in Japan tonight.

Change of seasons

Nothing says “Autumn” to me more than seeing the Hot Air Balloons out in the early morning.  We’ve been here over 7 years now and still get excited about seeing the balloons on cold frosty mornings.

The balloon festival is on next week, I can’t wait.  I hope they are going past our place again :-)   Autumn has come on really fast, just as we were getting in to the swing of Summer really.  The night have been cooler and the mornings quite cold, almost had a frost already.

We had some longed for rain on the weekend, Cameron and Lilly couldn’t resist going ou in the rain and playing in the big puddle in the driveway :-)

Yes it was cold !!!  and yes, they were still in their pyjamas.  Mad children!!

I sensibly stayed inside and made Blackberry jam.  I’d been a bit lazy and only been berry picking once this year (only blackberries, no raspberries this time), but a friend came to my rescue and gave me a couple of kilos of her thornless blackberries.  I got 9 jars of lovely jam.  Yum.!

I’m hoping for a gorgeous sunny day tomorrow so we can go on a last “Summer” outing.  Fingers crossed for a good day.

Just binding to go …

Now I need to find the right fabric to bind it with.  Can’t use the red and white stripe like the other quilt as the red is this quilt is a lot brighter and won’t match.  Might do a bit of fabric hunting tomorrow.

I’ve been trying out a new baby shoes pattern to use in the shop.  The shoes are cute, but I can’t seem to get the shape just right yet.  I may not end up using it for the shop anyway as they are way more labour intensive than my current pattern.  What do you think??

I tried making Cam some “king size” baby shoes, they turned out very cute !! Pity I stuffed up the sizing and they are too small :-(   I have just enough of the navy coat wool left to try making another pair for him. Lets hope I can get it right next time.
