Log cabin

This one without the wonkiness.
sdc10357

I’m finding it hard to get very motivated at the moment. the heat is just awful. 34°C here yesterday. It was a bit cooler at the river. We went to a new spot not far from here and Nathan was pleased to find a rope swing :-)

Wonky log cabin block

My first log cabin block, a wonky one :-)   I received the fabric to make Darci’s block yesterday for the Little Blue Cottage Quilting Bee.  I’ve never made a log cabin block before, or a wonky one, so I thought it might be prudent to practice before I make the block for Darci.  It was so much fun, and the tutorial here is fantastic.  Really it is, I suck at following instructions but these were great.

If I get some peace and quiet this afternoon I’ll make the one for the bee, and if the quiet lasts for a few hours I’ll make some more for me.  Hmm I really should be working on my UFO.  Oh well, maybe later. Can you tell I’m not really focused?  Backbone of a Jellyfish :-)

Mean mum!

After the birthdays in Dec and Jan, Christmas and getting two school uniforms this week, when I took Nathan to get his school books yesterday I refused to let the kids get new pencil cases.  It was definitely a want and not a need.  They both have at least two really nice pencil rolls each, so I was being  mean and stingy.  However I did have quite a lot of PUL scraps from nappy making, so I made them some pencil case instead.

Nathan has the narrow treasure one (small amount of fabric left for that), Lilly has the stripes and Cam has the vehicles one, which is now filled with cars and truck and not pencils.  Talk about quick and easy to make.  And free, because I already had the fabric and zips in my stash.  Yay.

I’m trying not to spend much money in the next week as the two pigs and the two sheep all have a date with the homekill butcher on Tuesday.

Presents!

A happy mail day today.  Hooray, always good not to get any bills in the mail, but even better to get gifts.

Pincushions from my swap.  Cute as a button, and made of flannel, so they are lovely and soft. Cam has been coveting them :-)

Thank you so much.

My fat quater swap :-)   Awesome.  I really love the tatoo fabric, and the garden one looks just like my garden at the moment.  Thanks Melanie for putting so much thought and effort in to the swap.  Cam loves the buttons, I had to hide them from him until I decide how to use them.  I’ll be posting yours away soon :-)

I even had a some luck with my fabric hunt.  After checking out every online fabric shop in New Zealand (and yes there are heaps) and visiting my local shop, with no luck, I finally went into my favourite quilting shop, and there was the fabric I was looking for.  Just goes to show I should have gone there in the first place. Doh!  Thanks to everyone who offered to have a look around for me.  Quilters are such lovely sharing people :-)   So after managing to get another charm pack for the rainbow quilt, I now have a complete piece for the back and another colour for binding.  Yay!  Anyone want to swap the charm pack for something else?

A close up

Sorry, those pics of the rainbow quilt showed the whole top, but weren’t much good to see the fabric very well.  So here  is a closer pic :-)

I’ve finally got all my fabric ready to send for the Little Blue Cottage quilting bee (I just have to decide how to cut it).  Want a peek?  It’s not bright, but dark and brooding.  But I really love Emily the Strange, and Lilly does too, I can see there will be a bit of a battle as to who gets this quilt when it’s done.

sdc10330

I really love this black with the red roses.

sdc10331

Most of the blocks will have one of the pics that I’ve printed.  It was so much fun printing directly onto the fabric :-)

Should be unique and interesting.

Speaking of printing on fabric, here is where  I got instructions. For bigger stuff, you can get custom fabric printed at Spoonflower.  I’ve ordered a yard, of a design that Nathan made.  I can’t wait to get it, I’ll be stalking the mailbox till it comes.  I’ll be blogging about it :-)   I can’t show you a preview, as the file is a funny type that doesn’t display easily on wordpress.

Rainbow ladders?

sdc10327

I’d really like to add a small border of one of the fabrics used in the quilt and another colour for the backing, but I’m having trouble sourcing more the the same line of fabric. I can’t get any online here in NZ, I did find one place (in the US), but the exchange rate is really bad, so can’t do that either :-( I’ll try my favourite shop on Wednesday, but the local one didn’t have any, so I’m not that hopeful. I used a charm pack of Moda “All about colour”. Finally got hold of some quilter’s muslin to use, which is the white on the front. Nice to work with :-)

A happy sewing day

Despite the weather (hot, hot, hot) I did finally get some sewing done yesterday, in fact almost a whole quilt top :-)   I bought a set of Moda charm squares before Xmas and was itching to use them, so I started sewing them yesterday.  I hope to finished the top today, but it will depend on how hot it gets.

sdc10326

I decided to take a pic of the purple quilt, as it will be a few weeks before I start handquilting it.

sdc10324

It really is full on Summer here at the moment.  The bigger kids have been going down to the river for a swim most days.  Cam has been having baths outside on the porch instead.  Lots of fun :-)

Another pincushion

Yay, I’ve finished both pincushions for my swap, just have to decide who gets what, and post them off.

sdc10312

I used leftover fabric from the quilt top I’ve just finished.  I’ve picked a pattern to quilt, but have decided to hand quilt this one.  So don’t expect finished pics anytime soon, I have to have lessons first on how to hand quilt :-)

Some more pincushions

sdc10310
These are not for the swap, I think I’ll do something a wee bit fancier for that.  The Scouts are doing a stall at the Martinborough Fair this year and we each have to donate something to sell, so these cute little pincushions will be my donation.  I really like the butterfly one best, the button in the middle is a butterfly too.
Our first sunflower is finally out.  I love sunflowers, they’re so cheerful, and food too :-)   There should be four in the end.  These are about 2 metres tall.   Wow.
